Hope Coconut Industries Restocks Lethem Nursery with 3,000 Seedlings

– continuing their mission to restock all ten nurseries with premium seed nuts

In their ongoing effort to provide farmers with high-yielding coconuts throughout Guyana, Ricky Roopchand, the Managing Director of Hope Coconut Industries Ltd, announced that the coconut nursery in Lethem, Region Nine, was fully restocked last week.

Mr. Roopchand exclusively informed The El Dorado Beacon that the Lethem nursery, which can accommodate 3000 coconut seed nuts, currently holds 2000 Brazilian Green Dwarf seed nuts and 1000 Suriname Brown (18-month variety).

He expressed his satisfaction with the enthusiasm that the community, particularly the youth, has demonstrated in Lethem, not only in the coconut sector but in the broader agricultural field.

According to Mr. Roopchand, “Farmers can expect these seedlings to be available in the next three to four weeks, based on the germination rate.”

Noting that the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) continue to play an integral role in ensuring that the farmers are provided with the necessary resources and services in the various regions, the Managing Director stated that he is grateful for the continuous support.

Mr. Roopchand also acknowledged that the efforts of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha in guiding the country towards food security have been exceptional.

While highlighting the impact of President Ali and Minister Mustapha in the agriculture sector, Mr. Roopchand said, “Of course, without their intervention, none of this would have been possible. These initiatives required extensive planning, a well-defined vision for farmers and their produce, and the assurance that their investments would yield benefits for them and their families.”

He further expressed his satisfaction with the quality of services and products that are at the nurseries in all 10 administrative regions.

Meanwhile, the general manager recently announced that the company has launched a programme to replenish all ten nurseries with premium seedlings and a high-yielding variety of Brazilian coconuts, which will provide farmers with easy access.

During a recent update from the island of Wakenaam, Mr. Roopchand stated that they had also restocked the nursery with the Brazilian Green Dwarf Coconut and the Suriname Brown (18-month) variety, which is preferred by numerous farmers in specific regions.

“This will be a continuous exercise throughout the year, with a target to import at least 120 thousand coconut seed nuts this year,” he stated.
